Beyond The Broker: Navigating Financial Advisory Independence
Beyond The Broker: Navigating Financial Advisory Independence
is an exercise into investigating, understanding then defining what independence means for you. A culmination of insights, strategies, and experiences that go beyond traditional brokerages. I hope this book will challenge your ability to do great things and think boldly.

Navigating Independence
You may be working in a financial advisory role now, possibly within a larger institution, wirehouse, or broker-dealer, or you might be early in your independence journey.
If you’re considering independence, balancing career growth with your personal life, overcoming industry biases, and/or how you will get clients, I want you to feel assured that a large and growing community of both men and women advocates is rooting for you! I’m connected to many of them in my network.
What Is Going on in Your Life Right Now?
Reframing your vision is personal.
What you wanted 10 or 15 years ago might be very different today. Life has a way of doing that.
It’s your vision, so you need to give some thought to it and be happy with it. No matter your direction or the twists and turns awaiting you, I want you to know you can change course. Give yourself permission to do that if it makes sense, and take the time to examine your motivations.
Stepping out into the unknown is gut-wrenching. You may have young children, be paying college tuition for your now-adulting children, or be part of the sandwich generation, taking care of children and aging parents.
Building Your Own Vision
In today’s advisory landscape, both male and female professionals with years of experience have decided they want “more freedom” and “less red tape” when servicing clients. They want fewer corporate headaches, a chance to be a true “fiduciary,” and to serve clients at a high level. This can equate to “independence,” but what type of independence makes the most sense?
Do you want to …
- Tell Big Brother Broker-Dealer, “We’re done,” “Go RIA,” and tuck into a large, established one?
- Go “all-in” on the entrepreneur path, hang up a shingle, and build an RIA from scratch?
- I’m not sure. I just can’t keep doing what I’ve been doing…

Meet Cameo Roberson
Cameo Roberson, Founder, Atlas Park Consulting, aka “the Operations Expert you didn’t know you needed until right now,” and author of the newsletter: The RIA Learning Hub, figured she needed to “create her own lane” after a series of layoffs. When she recognized her corporate days were numbered, Cameo took a chance on herself and launched Atlas Park Consulting. Now, she’s a two-time best-selling author, speaker, and international consultant serving clients in Canada and the US.
As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Cameo always felt like she had to continuously prove herself. It wasn’t enough to show up; there was constant pressure to do more and inconsistent support that caused her a lot of frustration. It wasn’t until Cameo got tired of being overlooked and acknowledged the gifts she had that she took a stand.
Cameo’s insights and subject matter expertise have graced the pages of industry-leading publications such as Wealth Management Magazine, US News & World Report, Advisor Perspectives, The Journal of Financial Planning, Forbes Magazine, Financial Planning Magazine, and Investor’s Business Daily.
Her unique approach, forged from over 15 years in the trenches of fee-only and fee-based advisory firms, brings a refreshing blend of innovation and practicality to the financial services landscape.
